ROCKTIME PRESENTS
PEARL JAM
AT

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA.
6/1/03
I think we've waited long enough considering Seattle residents were privy to seeing Pearl Jam kick out some of their new music on stage way before us Californians. I guess you have to pay a price to live where it's not raining all the time, and if you live in the rain nine months out of the year you get your Pearl Jam first. PJ released their most recent studio recorded album last November and have just begun an extensive U.S. tour that will be going through mid-July. The recent addition to the PJ catalogue is their final release on the Sony/Epic Records label. The two entities parted ways last week ending a twelve year relationship, stemming from the 1991 landmark debut of the album "Ten." The latest release is entitled "Riot Act." It has all of the patented full on flailing riffage of Jeff Ament, not to mention the unmistakable sound of Mike McCready and Stone Gossard intertwining guitar licks. The chemistry between these guys has always placed Pearl Jam in a category of their own. Immediately following it's release Pearl Jam performed in New York on the David Letterman show. Three weeks later, good PJ times could be seen on all five horizons. Some people were even lucky enough to see two warm-up shows at the Showbox, a small club in Seattle just two days before Pearl Jam gave their hometown fans a special two night stint at the Key Arena in the Seattle Center. The band took a short break and then took their new music out on the road in Australia and Japan during February and March.

Now is the time, the time is now. Don't wait, get your Pearl Jam tickets now. They are coming to a stage near you, and you don't want to miss it folks. The tour ends in New York (July 8-9th) and Hershey, PA. (July 12th). It has been too long, for me, since they last came around northern California, see reviews and photos of Pearl Jam Halloween 2000. The full sound and complicated melodies of Pearl Jam combined with the heavy emotions stirred by their music make PJ one of the most uniquely talented bands in rock and roll today. The show here in northern California was awesome, it started with Eddie Vedder coming to the stage and he did a quick little solo number. The show began with "Long Road," the lights were dimmed for the whole song. The lights came up a little for "Do the Evolution," but they were mostly on Eddie Vedder; snap, snap, mission accomplished! Glory be to god, the lights came up on the whole band momentarily for "Animal" and I got Jeff and Mike in the sights and pulled off some gravy shots just before the press shoot was over. This night was shaping up to be quite a blast. The Shoreline Amphiththeatre was around half filled to it's capacity, with over thirteen thousand tickets sold at gate time. I headed up to the lawn area for a little R & R with the masses, quickly settling into the perfect spot. I hung out, met some folks and tried to keep a few notes of the set. Then it was off to the races, I had to get a copy of the set list from the sound man. I headed toward the reserved seats to get closer to the sound board and a better view of the stage. I was wisked through by the security, as if they know me down there, I guess so, anyway I was right where I needed to be to seal the deal. The set list was as follows from the audio engineer at the helm :

The highlights of the show were "Thumbing My Way" and "Small Town." Although, I always love the intense energy of "Alive" and "Porch."With Stone and Mike both on electric guitars and Ed putting everything he has into the vocals. Special Mention goes to the part where Eddie ang thefirst line of Better Man and the crowd picked it up from there and san the next four or five lines and Ed came back in to finish the song as only he can. At eleven o'clock the curtaon is supposed to come down and the light are suppoed to come up. Not tonight folks, Eddie and crew decided to give their fans more than their money's worth and came back out to play a double encore of three more songs. I don'd know what the first song was, but the second was "Bu$hleaguer" from the new album and the third was Neil Young's "Fuckin Up." The band responsible for every minute of salary being paid to a thousand employees, refusing to leave until the fans are completely satisfied. That's Pearl Jam to the core, you gotta love it! Thanks for reading and we'll see ya at the shows.
