It's more than a concert, it's a show. Neil Young has been out on the road again with his band-itos as Crazy Horse rides again. I love this band, it is my favorite Neil band. This performance was fantastic, a revelation to the music world. Songs from the soon to be expected Neil Young and Crazy Horse album all became little movies that were acted out on stage behind the band. Live music always takes me to that special place in my own mind, but this concert takes you to that special place in Neil's mind. Yes, right into the deepest darkest corners of true emotion and real expression. Rock and roll, and all music for that matter, generally has long been interpretive. Essentially, you read into it what you want to get out of it; and come up with your own interpretation of what a song means for you. The landscape of rock and roll has been changed forever as theater and concert become one. This is not a new idea though, George Clinton was orchestrating stage antics throughout the seventies and eighties with similar role playing and characterizations of song subjects and themes. Neil has given us a slightly new twist on some old tricks. The difference being that the band is a separate entity than the subject actors. This being a concept album, the themes are recurring and hold much relevance to the world we live in. The characters in these songs, and the skits that portray them, are much more complex than anything that has been done in the past. The show/album is about a small town of twenty thousand in northern California called Greendale, and "It's everything you're looking for." There is a show bill, and it explains the background of a family that lives in Greendale, the Green family. The stage is set, Neil Young and Crazy Horse ramble onto the stage amidst raucous approval. Frank heads for the keyboards and Neil grabs a guitar and walks up to the wierdest looking microphone stand you've ever seen in your life. It looked like the frame to a space age Harley chopper, or something from another world. It has a couple of microphones and a harmonica clipped on it. As Neil starts to sing, you notice right away that there is nothing in rock concert history that has been done quite in this manner yet. There are people on stage that are mouthing the words that Neil is singing, it is all happening simultaneously. There are props on stage that lay out the situation, and each song is a story about the residents of Greendale. The performance was absolutely scintillating, a night to to remember forever.
